You can now check your PF balance on WhatsApp. Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the EPFO WhatsApp service on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day, and it shows your balance, your last five transactions and passbook details.
But there’s a catch nobody is talking about yet, and it decides whether this feature helps you or helps a scammer. It’s in section 3.
⚡ Key takeaways
- What’s new: EPFO WhatsApp service for PF balance, last 5 transactions and passbook info (launched 1 Nov 2026, per PTI).
- Also announced: inoperative EPF accounts with up to ₹1,000 will be settled automatically, no claim needed. About 1 lakh accounts (₹5 crore) qualify.
- The catch: as of the evening of 1 Nov, the official number wasn’t printed in the launch reports or on EPFO’s passbook page. Only use a number EPFO itself publishes.
- Works today, no wait: missed call 9966044425 or SMS EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your UAN-linked mobile.
What EPFO Launched on WhatsApp, and Why Now
The launch came at EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day event in New Delhi. According to the PTI report carried by Deccan Chronicle, subscribers can use “EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service” to see their PF balance, latest five transactions and passbook information.
The idea is simple. Most Indians already live on WhatsApp, and a lot of PF work still means a trip to the EPFO office or a fight with the member portal. The minister said the goal is to move routine services to a platform people already use.
Scale matters here. EPFO now manages a ₹32 lakh crore corpus for more than 8 crore members, as reported by the Free Press Journal. Even a small shift away from office visits saves a huge number of hours.

What You Can Check on EPFO WhatsApp
Here’s what the launch reports confirm, and what they don’t.
Confirmed at launch (1 Nov 2026)
- PF balance: your current EPF balance.
- Last five transactions: the latest credits, so you can see if your employer’s deposit landed.
- Passbook information: the details you’d normally see on the passbook website.
- PMVBRY help: guidance for completing requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, the scheme for first-time employees.
Reported earlier, not confirmed at launch
A Trade Brains report from 15 September described a “Hello” message flow, claim status tracking and regional language support. The 1 November coverage only mentions balance, transactions, passbook and PMVBRY guidance. So treat claim status on WhatsApp as “expected”, not live, until EPFO says otherwise.
💡 Pro tip
If you joined your first job after 1 August 2025, the PMVBRY help is worth a look. The official PMVBRY FAQ says first-timers earning up to ₹1 lakh a month can get one month’s EPF wage, capped at ₹15,000, but only with a UAN made through Face Authentication on the UMANG app.

Here’s the problem. On the evening of 1 November, none of the launch reports we read printed the WhatsApp number. EPFO’s own Member Passbook page still lists only the missed-call and SMS options.
That gap is exactly where scammers move in. Expect forwards like “Send Hi to this number for your PF balance” or “EPFO WhatsApp helpline, share UAN and OTP to verify”. Some will look official, with the EPFO logo as the display picture.
⚠️ Watch out
A logo and a green tick screenshot prove nothing. Take the EPFO WhatsApp number only from epfindia.gov.in, the passbook page, EPFO’s verified social media handles or a PIB release. Never from a forward, a YouTube comment or a Google ad.
EPFO’s passbook page carries its own warning, and it’s worth repeating to your parents: EPFO never calls members to deposit any amount, and you should never share Aadhaar, PAN or bank details on a call. The same logic applies to WhatsApp chats.
EPFO WhatsApp vs Missed Call, SMS and UMANG
Until the WhatsApp number is published everywhere, you don’t need to wait. These official options already work. We covered them step by step in our PF balance guide.
| Method | What you need | Shows | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPFO WhatsApp | UAN-linked mobile, official number | Balance, last 5 transactions, passbook info | Handy once the number is confirmed |
| Missed call 9966044425 | UAN-linked mobile | Balance by SMS | Fastest, works on keypad phones |
| SMS EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 | UAN-linked mobile | Balance by SMS | Good for low signal areas |
| Passbook website / UMANG | Activated UAN, password or OTP | Every monthly entry, PDF | Best for loans and job changes |
The missed-call and SMS numbers above are the ones printed on EPFO’s own passbook page. If your mobile number isn’t linked to your UAN, none of these will work, WhatsApp included. Fix that first on the member portal.

Up to ₹1,000 in an Old PF Account? You May Not Need to Claim It
The second announcement could matter more to people with old jobs behind them. Members with Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts holding up to ₹1,000 won’t have to file a claim. EPFO will start the settlement itself after verifying identity and bank details.
About one lakh accounts, worth roughly ₹5 crore in total, are expected to benefit, per the PTI report. That’s small money per person. But for a factory worker or a student who did a short internship years ago, ₹800 sitting idle is ₹800.
Two practical points:
- Aadhaar and bank details must match. One report notes that mismatched records can delay processing. Check that your name, date of birth and bank account are correct in the KYC section of the member portal.
- Bigger balances still need a claim. If your old account holds more than ₹1,000, this doesn’t apply. Transfer it to your current UAN or file a claim the usual way.
EPFO also said its average claim settlement time fell to 2.57 days in October 2026, credited to its CITES 2.01 system. So if you do need to file, it’s faster than it used to be.

Do this once, and you’ll be ready the day the number goes up on EPFO’s site.
- Find your UAN. It’s on your salary slip, or ask HR.
- Check which mobile is linked. Log in to the member portal and look at your profile. Update it if it’s an old number.
- Check KYC. Aadhaar, PAN and bank account should all show as approved.
- Try the missed call now. Dial 9966044425 from the linked mobile. If you get an SMS, your mobile link works and WhatsApp should too.
- Save the WhatsApp number only from an official EPFO source. Cross-check it on epfindia.gov.in before you type “Hi”.
- Tell your parents the rule. EPFO won’t ask for OTPs, fees or “verification charges” on WhatsApp. Anyone who does is a fraud, and the cybercrime helpline is 1930.
Fake “official” chats are an old trick: scammers already pose as banks, KYC desks and courier companies. Our guide to stopping spam calls with DND and Chakshu shows where to report fake EPFO chats too.
Our Verdict: Is It Worth Using?
✅ Our verdict
Yes, once you’ve confirmed the number from EPFO’s own website. Checking your PF balance and last five credits in a chat is genuinely useful, especially for keypad-to-smartphone upgraders and parents. Until then, the missed call works fine, and nothing about the WhatsApp launch is worth rushing into a random number for.
The best part is the ₹1,000 auto-settlement. It quietly fixes a problem that leaves small sums stuck for years. If you’ve had a short job and forgot the PF, check your old member ID on the portal this week.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the EPFO WhatsApp number?
As of the evening of 1 November 2026, the launch reports didn’t print it, and EPFO’s passbook page didn’t list it yet. Take it only from epfindia.gov.in, EPFO’s verified handles or a PIB release, never from a forward.
What can I check on EPFO WhatsApp?
Your PF balance, your latest five transactions and passbook information, plus help with PMVBRY requirements, according to the PTI report on the launch.
Can I track my PF claim status on WhatsApp?
An earlier report said claim status was planned, but the 1 November launch coverage didn’t mention it. Use the member portal or UMANG for claim status for now.
Is EPFO WhatsApp safe?
The official service is designed to work with your UAN-linked mobile. The risk is fake numbers pretending to be EPFO. If a chat asks for an OTP, a fee or your bank PIN, block and report it.
What happens to PF accounts with less than ₹1,000?
Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts with balances up to ₹1,000 will be settled automatically after identity and bank-account checks, without an individual claim.
The Bottom Line
The EPFO WhatsApp service is a real convenience for 8 crore members, and the ₹1,000 auto-payout is a nice bonus. Just don’t let the excitement push you to a fake number. Check your UAN-linked mobile today with the missed call, and save the WhatsApp number only when EPFO publishes it.
