Want to check credit score free in India? You don’t need a paid plan or a loan app to do it. RBI rules require every credit bureau to give you one free full credit report, with your score, once a calendar year, and India has four bureaus. That’s four free looks a year if you spread them out.
Checking your own score also doesn’t lower it. The part most people skip is the report itself, where a wrong entry can quietly cost you a loan. Section 4 shows what to look for, and section 5 explains how RBI rules now make bureaus pay you ₹100 a day if they’re slow to fix it.
⚡ Key takeaways
- RBI requires each credit information company to give you one Free Full Credit Report, including your credit score, every calendar year (January to December).
- India has four credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Use one every three months to track your credit for free.
- Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and doesn’t affect it. Loan and card applications are hard enquiries.
- Since January 2025, lenders must update your data at least every fortnight, so repayments show up faster.
- If an error isn’t fixed within 30 days of your complaint, you’re entitled to ₹100 a day in compensation.
Why You Should Check Your Credit Score Free Before Diwali Shopping
Festive season is when many of us take a no-cost EMI, a new credit card, or a pre-approved loan offer. Each of those starts with the lender pulling your credit report. If something on it is wrong, an old loan shown as unpaid or a card you never took, you find out when the application gets rejected.
If you check credit score free a month before you apply, you have time to act. It takes about ten minutes. You see what lenders see, and you have time to fix errors before you need the credit.
There’s also a fraud angle. After the recent data-leak scares, many people want to know whether someone has taken a loan in their name. Your credit report is the one place where that shows up. Our guide on what to do after a bank data breach explains the other steps.

Your Free Report: What RBI Rules Say
On 26 October 2023, RBI issued a circular on strengthening customer service by credit information companies. It came into force six months later. The key rules for you:
- Every credit information company (CIC) must give “easy access” to a Free Full Credit Report, including your credit score, once a year, counting January to December.
- The link must be shown prominently on the CIC’s website home page.
- CICs must send you an SMS or email alert when a lender or other specified user pulls your report.
- Lenders must alert you by SMS or email when they report a default or overdue payment about you.
India has four licensed credit bureaus. All four were named in RBI’s June 2023 penalty action for inaccurate data, as Entrackr reported: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. The free-report rule applies to each one separately.
💡 Pro tip
Spread them out. Take the free CIBIL report in January, Experian in April, Equifax in July and CRIF High Mark in October. That gives you a fresh look every three months without paying anything.

The steps are similar on all four bureau websites. Use the official site, typed directly in your browser, not a link from an SMS or ad.
- Go to the bureau’s own website: cibil.com, experian.in, equifax.co.in or crifhighmark.com. Look for the free credit report or free score link on the home page.
- Enter your details: name, date of birth, PAN, mobile number and email. Use the same PAN and mobile you gave your bank.
- Verify with OTP: you’ll get an OTP on your mobile. Never share this OTP with anyone who calls you.
- Answer identity questions if asked. Some bureaus check details like your existing loans or cards.
- Download the full report, not only the score. The score is one number; the report shows what drives it.
| Option | Cost | What you get | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Full Credit Report on the bureau website | ₹0, once a year per bureau | Full report + score | Best choice; use all four across the year |
| Bank or card app score widget | Usually free | Score, sometimes a summary | Handy for a quick look, but usually one bureau only |
| Loan and fintech apps | Free | Score, plus loan offers | Expect marketing calls; read the consent screen |
| Paid bureau subscription | Monthly or yearly fee | Unlimited refreshes, alerts | Only worth it if you’re fixing a problem or applying for a home loan |

Does checking lower your score?
No. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank explains that checking your own score is a soft enquiry, which doesn’t affect it. A hard enquiry happens when a lender checks your report for a loan or card application. Ujjivan says one hard enquiry may cost 5 to 10 points, and several in a short time can cause a bigger drop.
What to Look For in Your Credit Report
The score gets all the attention, but errors live in the report. Here’s a quick checklist:
- Personal details: name spelling, date of birth, PAN, addresses and phone numbers. Unknown phone numbers can be a sign of someone else’s data mixed with yours.
- Accounts: every loan and credit card in your name. Anything you don’t recognise is the first red flag.
- Payment history: look for “DPD” (days past due) entries on months you know you paid on time.
- Closed accounts: a loan you closed should show as closed, not “written off” or “settled”.
- Enquiries: hard enquiries from lenders you never applied to.
⚠️ Watch out
“Settled” is not the same as “closed”. A settled loan means you paid less than the full amount, and lenders treat it as a negative. If a loan you fully repaid shows as settled or written off, dispute it with proof of closure.
Since 1 January 2025, RBI’s fortnightly reporting rule requires lenders to update credit data as of the 15th and the last day of every month, and submit it within seven days. Bureaus then have five days to load it. So if you just cleared a card bill, give it a few weeks before you worry that it isn’t showing.
Found an Error? RBI’s ₹100-a-Day Rule
You can raise a dispute on the bureau’s website, usually from the same login where you downloaded the report. Attach proof: a loan closure letter, a no-dues certificate or bank statements.
RBI’s directions, consolidated in a master direction reported by Outlook Money, set clear deadlines:
| Who | Deadline | If they miss it |
|---|---|---|
| Your bank or lender (credit institution) | Send corrected data within 21 calendar days of being told | Pays compensation |
| Credit bureau (CIC) | Resolve your complaint within 30 calendar days | Pays compensation |
| Compensation | ₹100 per calendar day after 30 days from your first complaint | Credited to your bank account within 5 working days of resolution |
If you’re denied the compensation, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Keep screenshots of your complaint date and every reply.

✅ Our verdict
Check at least once a year, and before any big loan or new credit card. The best free routine is one bureau every three months, which costs nothing and catches fraud early. Skip paid “credit improvement” services: the free report plus a proper dispute does the same job.
Don’t sign up for every app that offers a “free CIBIL score” either. Many are lead-generation tools for loans and cards, and you’ll start getting calls. If you do use one, read what you’re consenting to on the sign-up screen.
And be careful with anyone who calls to “fix your CIBIL” for a fee or asks for your OTP. That’s a scam. Report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check credit score free in India?
Visit the website of any of the four credit bureaus (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark) and use the free credit report link on the home page. RBI rules require each one to give you one free full report with your score every calendar year.
Does checking my own credit score reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and doesn’t affect it. Only hard enquiries, made by lenders when you apply for a loan or card, can lower it.
How many times can I get a free credit report?
Once per calendar year from each of the four credit bureaus. That’s up to four free full reports a year if you use all of them.
How long does it take to correct an error in my credit report?
Lenders must send corrected data within 21 days and bureaus must resolve complaints within 30 days. After 30 days from your first complaint, you’re entitled to ₹100 per day in compensation.
Why is my CIBIL score different from my Experian score?
Each bureau uses its own scoring model and may hold slightly different data from lenders. Small differences are normal; big gaps can point to an error worth checking.
The Bottom Line
You don’t need to pay anyone: you can check credit score free, four times a year. Take your free full report from one of the four bureaus today, read the accounts and payment history line by line, and dispute anything wrong with proof. With the 30-day deadline and ₹100-a-day compensation, the rules are on your side now.
