Google Photos Storage Full? Free Up Space Without Paying ₹130

Google Photos storage full, right in the middle of Diwali photo season? You can usually clear several GB for free in 15 minutes using Google’s own storage manager, without buying the ₹130-a-month 100 GB plan. The trick is knowing what’s actually eating your 15 GB, because it often isn’t your photos.

There’s also one popular button in the Photos app that people press to fix this, and it doesn’t free a single MB of Google storage. Section 4 explains which one, and why it’s the most common mistake.

⚡ Key takeaways

  • Every Google Account gets 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. A full Gmail can make Photos say “storage full”.
  • Google’s storage manager finds blurry photos, screenshots and large videos for you to delete in a few taps.
  • “Recover storage” converts already-backed-up photos to Storage saver quality (16 MP photos, 1080p videos), once a day.
  • Deleted photos stay in the bin for 30 days and still count until the bin is emptied.
  • “Free up space on this device” only clears your phone, not your Google storage.

Why Your Google Photos Storage Full Warning Appears

Google says each Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of storage, shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos (Google Photos Help). So “Google Photos storage full” really means “your Google Account is full”, and the culprit could be a decade of Gmail attachments or a WhatsApp backup sitting in Drive.

Photos are often the biggest part, though. Since 1 June 2021, every photo and video you back up counts against that 15 GB, whether it’s in Original quality or Storage saver. Photos backed up in High or Express quality before that date don’t count, and Pixel 5 and older Pixel phones still get unlimited backup from the device.

Diwali makes it worse. Long 4K videos of the puja, burst shots of phuljhadi and twenty near-identical family photos add up fast. Videos, especially 4K ones, are usually the heaviest files in any library.

Step 1: See What’s Actually Using Your Space

Before deleting anything, find the biggest offender. Here’s how, based on Google’s own help page:

  1. Open Google Photos, Gmail or Drive on your phone.
  2. Tap Manage storage (or Clean up space if you see a storage-full banner). This opens the Google One storage manager.
  3. Tap Usage details to see how much each service uses.

You’ll see a split like “Photos 11 GB, Gmail 3 GB, Drive 1 GB”. Now you know where to start. If Gmail is big, fix that first; it’s often old attachments you’ll never open again.

💡 Pro tip

In Gmail, type larger:10M in the search box. Google’s search help lists this operator, and it shows every email bigger than 10 MB. Delete the old ones with heavy attachments, then empty Gmail’s Bin.

1. Let the storage manager find the junk

In the storage manager, choose Clean up by service, then Google Photos. Google says it can surface blurry photos, screenshots and large videos. Swipe right to mark an item for deletion, swipe left to keep it, then tap Review and Delete.

2. Convert old photos with “Recover storage”

Google’s backup quality help page explains that Recover storage converts photos and videos you’ve already backed up into Storage saver quality (Google Photos Help: backup quality). Photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p become 1080p. Find it at photos.google.com/settings under Manage storage.

Two limits: you can only use it once a day, and it doesn’t change future uploads. If your phone shoots 50 MP or 200 MP photos, this can free a lot.

3. Change future backups to Storage saver

In the same settings page, pick Storage saver as your backup quality. On a phone screen or a WhatsApp share, most people won’t see the difference. Keep Original quality only if you print large photos or edit professionally.

4. Empty the bin

Deleted Google Photos items sit in the bin for 30 days and are removed permanently after that, according to Google. If you need the space today, open the bin and empty it once you’re sure.

The Catch: “Free Up Space” Only Clears Your Phone

This is the mistake most people make. The Google Photos app has a Free up space on this device option, and it sounds like the fix. It isn’t.

⚠️ Watch out

“Free up space on this device” deletes the phone’s copy of photos and videos that are already backed up. Google’s help page says it frees storage on your Android phone, not your Google Account. Your 15 GB stays exactly as full as before.

It’s still useful if your phone says storage is full. Google’s notes on that feature are worth knowing: photos less than 30 days old may stay on the phone, and once removed, you won’t see those photos in your phone’s built-in gallery or while offline. Our guide on speeding up a slow Android phone covers more ways to clear phone storage.

The opposite also catches people: deleting a backed-up photo inside Google Photos sends it to the Google Photos bin, so don’t delete there thinking you’re only clearing the phone.

When Paying for Google One Makes Sense

If you’ve cleaned up and you’re still near 15 GB, a plan isn’t a bad deal. Google One’s India plans page lists these monthly prices:

PlanStoragePrice
Free15 GB₹0
Lite30 GB₹59 a month
Basic100 GB₹130 a month

Google says annual billing saves up to 16%. Check the plan page for current offers before you subscribe, since prices and trial deals change.

Before paying, also clear Drive. In the storage manager, choose Clean up by service and then Drive for large files. Old WhatsApp backups in Drive are a common surprise; our guide to moving WhatsApp chats to a new phone explains how those backups work.

Our Verdict: What to Do First

✅ Our verdict

Start with Usage details, then delete large videos and screenshots through the storage manager. Use Recover storage if you shoot high-MP photos, switch future backups to Storage saver, and empty the bin. Only buy a plan if you’re still above 13 GB after all that; for most families, the ₹59 Lite plan is enough breathing room.

One more habit helps. After every big event, spend five minutes deleting the duplicates and failed shots while you still remember which one was the good photo. It’s much easier than sorting 4,000 photos in March.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Google Photos storage full when I don’t have many photos?

Your 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Google Drive. Large email attachments or Drive files, including old backups, can fill the account even if your Photos library is small.

Does deleting photos from my phone free up Google storage?

Not if you use “Free up space on this device”. That removes only the phone copies of backed-up items. To free Google storage, delete the photos in Google Photos and empty the bin.

What is Storage saver in Google Photos?

It’s a backup quality that resizes photos above 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. It still counts toward your storage, but it uses less space than Original quality.

How long do deleted photos stay in the Google Photos bin?

30 days. They’re removed permanently after that, and they keep using storage until then unless you empty the bin.

How much does Google One cost in India?

Google’s India plans page lists Lite (30 GB) at ₹59 a month and Basic (100 GB) at ₹130 a month, with annual billing saving up to 16%.

The Bottom Line

When Google Photos storage is full, don’t reach for your card first. Check Usage details, clear large videos, screenshots and Gmail attachments, use Recover storage, then empty the bin. And remember that the “Free up space” button only helps your phone, not your Google Account.
