Transfer WhatsApp Chats to a New Phone: All 4 Ways Explained

You can transfer WhatsApp chats to a new phone for free, with photos and voice notes, in about 15 to 30 minutes. The method depends on the switch: a QR code for Android to Android or iPhone to iPhone, Move to iOS for Android to iPhone, and a cable for iPhone to Android.

There’s one rule that decides whether it works at all. Do the transfer before you start using WhatsApp on the new phone. The other catch, for iPhone buyers, is in section 4.

⚡ Key takeaways

  • Same platform (Android → Android or iPhone → iPhone): use WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer with a QR code. Both phones on power and Wi-Fi.
  • Android → iPhone: use Apple’s Move to iOS app. The iPhone must be brand new or factory reset.
  • iPhone → Android: connect with a cable during the Android phone’s first setup and pick WhatsApp.
  • Call history and payment messages don’t move across platforms. Keep the old phone untouched until your chats show up.
  • This guide is for regular WhatsApp. WhatsApp says chat transfer isn’t available on the WhatsApp Business app for some routes.

Why You Need to Transfer WhatsApp Chats Properly

For most of us, WhatsApp holds years of family photos, school group chats, bills and voice notes from parents. When you switch phones during a Diwali upgrade, you don’t want to lose any of it.

The trouble is that WhatsApp has four different ways to move, and picking the wrong one can cost you. If you register WhatsApp on the new phone first and use it for a day, the old history can’t be merged in later. WhatsApp’s help page says you’d have to wipe the new device and start again.

So before you even open WhatsApp on the new phone, decide which route fits your switch. The table in section 5 sums it up.

Way 1: Android to Android With a QR Code

This is the easiest route. WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer guide says it moves your full history, including messages, photos, videos and documents. It doesn’t use the cloud, so the size of your media doesn’t matter.

What you need

  • Android 6 or above on both phones.
  • The same phone number on the new phone.
  • Both phones close together, plugged into power, with Wi-Fi turned on. They don’t need to be connected to a network.
  • The new phone must not be registered on WhatsApp yet.

Steps

  1. On the old phone, open WhatsApp and tap More options > Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start.
  2. On the new phone, install WhatsApp, tap Agree and continue and verify your number.
  3. Under Restore or transfer chats, choose Transfer from old phone, then Continue > Start.
  4. Scan the QR code on the new phone with the old phone’s camera, then tap Accept.
  5. Keep both phones unlocked with WhatsApp open until the progress bar finishes, then tap Next.

Messaging pauses while the transfer runs. iPhone to iPhone works the same way, through WhatsApp’s own Chat Transfer.

💡 Pro tip

Plug both phones into chargers before you start. A big chat history can take a while, and WhatsApp says both phones should stay on power.

Way 2: Back Up and Restore

Backups are the fallback if your old phone is broken, lost or already reset.

On Android

WhatsApp’s backup guide says you can back up to your Google Account under Settings > Chats > Chat backup. WhatsApp is also testing its own end-to-end encrypted cloud storage, which may not have reached your account yet.

To restore, use the same phone number and the same Google Account you backed up with.

On iPhone

iPhone backups go to iCloud, and you restore them with the same number and Apple Account.

Turn on end-to-end encryption

In the same Chat backup menu, tap End-to-end encrypted backup and pick a passkey, password or 64-digit key. Write it down. WhatsApp says it’s the only way to open that backup later.

Way 3: Android to iPhone (Move to iOS)

This is the route with the most conditions. WhatsApp’s Android to iPhone guide asks for:

  • Android 5 or above, and iOS 15.5 or above on the iPhone.
  • Apple’s Move to iOS app on the Android phone. WhatsApp warns that other transfer apps aren’t supported.
  • The latest WhatsApp on both phones and the same phone number.
  • Both phones on power and on the same Wi-Fi, or the Android joined to the iPhone’s hotspot.

⚠️ Watch out

The catch: your iPhone must be factory new or factory reset. If you’ve already set it up and started using it, WhatsApp says this transfer isn’t available. You’d need to erase the iPhone and set it up again.

Steps

  1. Start setting up the new iPhone and choose to move data From Android.
  2. Open Move to iOS on the Android phone and enter the code shown on the iPhone.
  3. Select WhatsApp on the Transfer Data screen, tap Start and let WhatsApp prepare the export. You’ll be signed out on Android.
  4. Finish the transfer, install WhatsApp from the App Store and log in with the same number.
  5. Tap Start when asked, and your chats appear.

Apple’s Move to iOS page also lists WhatsApp messages and media among what transfers. Your Android phone keeps its copy until you delete WhatsApp or wipe it.

Way 4: iPhone to Android With a Cable

Moving the other way uses the Android phone’s own setup. Google’s Android guide to moving messages explains the steps:

  1. Start setting up the new Android phone and choose to copy apps and data.
  2. Connect both phones with a cable, and tap Trust on the iPhone if asked.
  3. Sign in to your Google Account and tick WhatsApp on the copy screen.
  4. Keep the iPhone unlocked, scan the QR code on the Android with the iPhone’s camera, and export from WhatsApp.
  5. When it’s done, open WhatsApp on the Android and sign in.

Google says this copy works only by cable, not Wi-Fi. A USB-C to Lightning cable is needed for older iPhones.

Mistakes That Make People Lose Chats

Most lost chats come from the same few slips.

  1. Using WhatsApp on the new phone first. WhatsApp can restore history only before you activate it on the new device. It can’t merge old and new chats.
  2. Resetting the old phone too early. WhatsApp’s own advice is not to delete data, reset or uninstall WhatsApp on the old phone until the transfer is confirmed.
  3. Forgetting the backup password. An end-to-end encrypted backup can’t be opened without it.
  4. Changing your number at the same time. Change the number on the old phone first, then move. Registering a new number on a new phone without doing that loses the history.
  5. Using random “WhatsApp transfer” apps. WhatsApp says unsupported transfer apps cause problems, and some ask for full access to your chats.

Which Way Should You Use?

✅ Our verdict

Use the QR Chat Transfer for same-platform moves. It’s fast, needs no cloud space and keeps everything. For Android to iPhone, do the Move to iOS step during the iPhone’s first setup, not after. For iPhone to Android, do it with a cable during setup. Use backups only when the old phone is lost or dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transfer WhatsApp chats from Android to Android?

On the old phone, go to Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start. On the new phone, verify your number and pick Transfer from old phone, then scan the QR code. Both phones need power and Wi-Fi turned on.

Can I transfer WhatsApp chats to an iPhone I’ve already set up?

Not with the Move to iOS method. WhatsApp says the iPhone must be factory new or factory reset. Otherwise you’d have to erase the iPhone and set it up again.

Will my WhatsApp call history move to the new phone?

Across platforms, no. WhatsApp says call history can’t be transferred from Android to iPhone, and Google lists call history among what doesn’t move from iPhone to Android.

Do I need internet to transfer WhatsApp chats?

For the QR Chat Transfer between two Android phones, WhatsApp says Wi-Fi must be on but the phones don’t need to be connected to a network. Backups and restores need an internet connection.

The Bottom Line

To transfer WhatsApp chats safely, pick the route before you open WhatsApp on the new phone, keep both phones charging, and leave the old phone alone until you see your chats. If you’re giving the old phone away, check our guide to buying a used phone to see how the buyer will check it.
