The new Jio voice-only plan starts at ₹147, but that’s the shortest pack, not the cheapest per day. The ₹177 pack costs less a day, and just ₹12 more gets you a plan with 2GB of data.
So who should buy these? Fewer people than the ₹147 headline suggests, though for a parent’s calling-only phone they can make real sense. The maths is in section 2, and the one mistake that could leave your father unable to open WhatsApp is in section 4.
⚡ Key takeaways
- Jio’s voice-only plans: ₹147 (22 days), ₹177 (28 days), ₹196 (30 days), ₹197 (1 month), ₹448 (84 days), ₹1,748 (336 days).
- Cheapest per day among Jio’s short packs: ₹177, at about ₹6.32.
- For a full year, Airtel and Vi’s ₹1,849 plans work out cheapest at about ₹5.06 a day.
- Jio’s ₹189 plan with 2GB costs ₹12 more than ₹177 for the same 28 days, so most smartphone users should pick that.
- Best for: feature phones, calling-only phones, or a second SIM. Skip if the person uses WhatsApp or UPI away from Wi-Fi.
Why the Jio Voice-Only Plan Exists
These plans exist because TRAI forced them. Beebom’s 2 November comparison puts it plainly: TRAI’s rules made operators offer voice-and-SMS-only recharges. As we covered in our Airtel plan breakdown, the regulation is aimed at people paying for data they never use.
Airtel went first, in mid-October. Jio’s short packs arrived around the end of October, listed under “TRAI Mandated Packs” on its site, according to the Free Press Journal. All of them give unlimited calls and SMS but zero mobile data.
Think about who that helps: a parent with a keypad phone, a grandparent who only answers calls, or a second SIM you keep alive for OTPs. For them, a bundled data plan is money burnt every month.

Jio Voice-Only Plan Prices: The Per-Day Sum
Here’s the whole Jio list, using Digit’s plan details and Beebom’s per-day figures.
| Price | Validity | Cost per day | SMS | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹147 | 22 days | ₹6.68 | 300 | None |
| ₹177 | 28 days | ₹6.32 | 300 | None |
| ₹196 | 30 days | ₹6.53 | 300 | None |
| ₹197 | 1 calendar month | About ₹6.35 | 300 | None |
| ₹448 | 84 days | ₹5.33 | 1,000 | JioTV, JioAICloud |
| ₹1,748 | 336 days | ₹5.20 | 3,600 | JioTV, JioAICloud |
So the ₹147 plan is the smallest bill, not the best value. It’s useful if ₹30 this week really matters. Otherwise you’re paying more a day and recharging more often, which is an easy thing to forget on a parent’s number.
💡 Pro tip
For someone who forgets recharge dates, ₹197 is the one to look at. It renews on the same date each month, so “the 5th” stays the 5th.

Jio vs Airtel vs Vi: Who’s Cheapest?
The answer changes with how long you recharge for. These are Beebom’s figures, with my verdict in the last column.
| Validity | Jio | Airtel | Vi | Lowest bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| About 28 days | ₹177 | ₹185 | ₹185 | Jio by ₹8 |
| 30 days | ₹196 | ₹203 | ₹203 | Jio by ₹7 |
| 1 month | ₹197 | ₹206 | ₹206 | Jio by ₹9 |
| 84 days | ₹448 | ₹469 | ₹470 | Jio by ₹21 |
| Long plan | ₹1,748 (336 days) | ₹1,849 (365 days) | ₹1,849 (365 days) | Airtel or Vi, per day |
Jio’s long plan looks ₹101 cheaper, but it’s 29 days shorter. Per day, Jio is ₹5.20 and the other two are ₹5.06, so over a year Airtel and Vi come out slightly ahead.
Don’t port a number over ₹8 a month, though. A saving of about ₹100 a year won’t help if your parent’s village or building has weak Jio signal, and the best network is the one that actually connects their calls.

The Mistake: Buying No-Data for a Smartphone User
⚠️ Watch out
A voice-only plan has no mobile data at all. If your parent uses WhatsApp calls, UPI or Google Maps while out, these will simply stop working unless there’s Wi-Fi around. Don’t switch them without asking how they actually use the phone.
For light data users, the numbers barely justify going voice-only. The Free Press Journal points to Jio’s ₹189 plan with 2GB for 28 days, and Digit lists it with unlimited calls, 300 SMS, JioTV and JioAICloud. That’s ₹12 more than the ₹177 voice pack for the same 28 days.
Two more points to check:
- Data charges elsewhere: Beebom notes Airtel charges 50 paise per MB if you use data without a data pack. That’s ₹512 for 1 GB, so turn mobile data off on a voice-only Airtel phone.
- SMS after 300: Beebom lists about ₹1 per SMS once the allowance runs out on these plans. A heavy OTP user could notice this.
How to Pick the Right Plan in 4 Steps
Sit with the phone for two minutes and go through this.
- Look at the data use. Open Settings on the phone and find Mobile data usage. If it’s near zero for months, voice-only makes sense.
- Pick the length. Can you pay ₹1,748 or ₹1,849 once? Do it, since it’s the lowest per day and there’s less to forget. If cash is tight, take ₹177.
- Use the official route. Recharge in the MyJio app or on Jio’s site, under “TRAI Mandated Packs”. Avoid links in SMS or WhatsApp that promise a cheaper rate.
- Set a reminder. Put the expiry date in your own phone’s calendar, not your parent’s.
💡 Pro tip
If the phone’s only there for bank OTPs, remember that recharge lapses can cost you the number. Keeping a backup SIM alive is often why these plans are worth it. Our SIM-binding rule explainer explains why your active SIM now matters for WhatsApp as well.

Who Should Buy, and Who Should Skip
✅ Our verdict
Buy a Jio voice-only plan for a keypad phone, a calling-only parent or a backup SIM. Choose ₹177 for monthly, ₹197 for a fixed date, or ₹1,748 for a long stretch. Everyone with a smartphone who uses even a little data should skip it and pay the extra ₹12 for ₹189.
- Your parent has a keypad phone: voice-only is right. Consider the long plan so nobody has to think about it.
- Your parent uses WhatsApp at home on Wi-Fi only: voice-only works, but set up the safety settings for their phone too.
- You’re a light data user: check the ₹189 plan first.
- You’re on Airtel or Vi and happy: stay put and read our Airtel plan maths. Porting isn’t worth ₹8.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest Jio voice-only plan?
₹147 for 22 days is the lowest bill. Per day, ₹177 for 28 days is cheaper among the short packs at about ₹6.32, and ₹1,748 for 336 days is the lowest at ₹5.20.
Does the Jio ₹147 plan include data?
No. It includes unlimited calls and 300 SMS, with no mobile data. Jio’s ₹189 plan is the low-cost option that includes 2GB for 28 days.
Is Jio cheaper than Airtel and Vi for voice-only?
On short plans, yes, by ₹7 to ₹9 a recharge. Over a full year, Airtel’s and Vi’s ₹1,849 plans come out slightly cheaper per day at ₹5.06, compared with ₹5.20 on Jio’s ₹1,748 plan.
Will WhatsApp work on a voice-only plan?
Only on Wi-Fi, since these packs don’t include mobile data. WhatsApp and UPI will stop working when the phone is away from Wi-Fi.
Should I port my parent’s number to Jio to save money?
Usually not. The gap is under ₹10 a month, and network quality at their home matters more. Test signal with a neighbour’s Jio phone before deciding.
The Bottom Line
The ₹147 Jio voice-only plan is a low bill, not the best value. Pick ₹177 for monthly, the long pack if you can pay once, and ₹189 if the phone uses any data at all. Look at the phone’s data use tonight, then recharge in the MyJio app.
