Lost your phone in a market crowd, a train or an auto? You can block a lost phone across every Indian network on the government’s Sanchar Saathi portal, so nobody else can use it here, and the system flags it if someone tries. The Department of Telecommunications shows 62.98 lakh phones blocked and 38.94 lakh traced so far.
The block itself takes ten minutes. What trips most people up is the order of steps, because one item has to be ready before the form even lets you in. That’s in section 3.
⚡ Key takeaways
- First 10 minutes: try Find Hub (Android) or Find My (iPhone), lock the phone and show a contact number.
- Next: block the SIM with your operator and get a duplicate SIM, then file a police complaint.
- Then: block the handset on Sanchar Saathi (CEIR) using the police complaint number and the duplicate SIM for OTP.
- Protect money: call your bank, change your Google or Apple password, and report fraud on 1930.
- Found it? Unblock it on the same portal with your request ID.
What “Block Your Lost Phone” on Sanchar Saathi Does
Sanchar Saathi is a citizen service from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Its lost-phone tool runs on CEIR, the Central Equipment Identity Register, which works with your phone’s IMEI number rather than your SIM.
According to the Sanchar Saathi FAQ, the facility blocks a lost or stolen phone “in network of all telecom operators so that lost/stolen devices cannot be used in India.” If anyone tries to use the blocked phone, the system generates traceability. Once you find your phone, you can unblock it for normal use.
That’s the key difference from just blocking your SIM. A thief can throw your SIM away and put in a new one. Blocking the IMEI makes the handset itself useless on Indian networks.

The First 10 Minutes: Find, Lock, Message
Before you touch the CEIR form, try to locate the phone. Sometimes it’s just under a seat.
On Android: Find Hub
Open Find Hub on a friend’s phone or a laptop and sign in with your Google account. Google’s help page says you can:
- See it on a map, or its last known location if it’s offline.
- Play a sound at full volume for 5 minutes, even if it’s on silent.
- Mark it as lost, which locks the screen and lets you show a message and a contact number.
Find Hub only works if the phone has power, is online, is signed in to Google and has Find Hub turned on.
On iPhone: Find My
Use Find My on another Apple device or at icloud.com/find. Apple’s guidance is to mark it as lost first, which locks it with your passcode and suspends Apple Pay cards. Apple also says to file a police report and to erase the phone only as a last resort, because erasing can’t be undone.
⚠️ Watch out
Don’t erase your phone in panic. Apple notes that keeping the device in Find My keeps Activation Lock on, which makes a stolen iPhone harder to resell. Erase only once you’re sure it isn’t coming back.

This is the catch from the start. The CEIR form asks for an OTP on your lost mobile number, which means you need a duplicate SIM first. Here’s the official list of prerequisites from the CEIR blocking form:
| What CEIR asks for | Required? | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Police report / complaint copy | Yes | Your local police station, or your state police’s online lost-article service where available |
| Re-issued (duplicate) SIM for the lost number | Yes, for OTP | Your Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL store, with ID |
| Valid identity proof | Yes | Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, driving licence |
| Purchase invoice | Optional | Your email, Flipkart or Amazon order page, or the shop bill |
| IMEI number(s) | If available | Phone box, invoice, or your Google account device list |
The form also asks for the phone brand, model, price, where and when you lost it, and the police station and complaint number.
💡 Pro tip
Do this today, while your phone is still in your pocket: note your IMEI. It’s printed on the box and usually on the invoice, and Google’s Find Hub help points to android.com/find for looking it up. Save it in your email or as a photo of the box. Losing the phone is the worst time to start looking for it.

- Call your bank and ask them to block mobile banking or UPI on the lost device. Most UPI apps also need your UPI PIN, but don’t rely on that alone.
- Change your Google or Apple account password from another device, and sign the lost phone out of Gmail and WhatsApp where possible.
- Get WhatsApp back by registering your number on a new phone with the duplicate SIM. Our WhatsApp transfer guide covers restoring chats.
- If money is taken, call the cybercrime helpline 1930 immediately. Our guide on money missing from a bank account explains RBI’s liability rules and deadlines.

Our Verdict: Is Blocking Worth the Effort?
✅ Our verdict
Yes, every time. The police complaint and duplicate SIM feel like a hassle, but blocking the IMEI is the only step that makes the handset useless to a thief in India, and it gives the phone a real chance of being traced. Do Find Hub or Find My first, then the SIM, then CEIR, and protect your bank accounts in parallel.
If you’re buying a second-hand phone, the same system protects you too. Our used phone checklist shows how to check a phone’s IMEI on Sanchar Saathi before you pay.
