To cancel UPI AutoPay, open the UPI app where you approved it, find its AutoPay or Mandates section, pick the mandate and confirm with your UPI PIN. On Google Pay that’s profile picture, Autopay, then Cancel, and it takes under two minutes.
Each app hides this in a different place, so we’ve listed them. There’s also one catch: cancelling a mandate doesn’t always end what you signed up for. Section 4 explains how to avoid that surprise.
⚡ Key takeaways
- Check every UPI app you’ve used, since a mandate lives in the app where you approved it.
- RBI’s 2026 e-mandate framework says you can withdraw a mandate at any time, with authentication such as your UPI PIN.
- You should get an alert at least 24 hours before each debit, and it’s your last easy chance to stop that payment.
- Cancelling stops future debits. It doesn’t refund old ones, and it may not close the subscription.
- Google Pay says loan mandates can’t be cancelled in the app. Talk to the lender.
Why Your UPI AutoPay List Is Worth Checking Today
UPI AutoPay is great until you forget about it. That ₹1 free trial for a streaming app, the fitness app you used for three weeks in January, the “just this month” cloud storage plan. Each can carry a mandate that keeps pulling money quietly.
Small debits are the easy ones to miss, especially if your bank SMS alerts sit unread among OTPs and Diwali offers. Five minutes with this list can pay for itself by next month.
The timing is good too. Festival shopping means more free trials and more “cancel any time” sign-ups. Do the clean-up now, and do it again after the season.

Your Rights: What RBI’s 2026 Rules Say
This isn’t a favour from the apps. RBI issued the Digital Payments E-mandate Framework on 21 April 2026, effective immediately, and MediaNama’s report says it covers recurring payments on cards, prepaid instruments and UPI.
What matters to you, based on that report and Business Today’s explainer:
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Withdraw any time | You can cancel or change a mandate whenever you want, with authentication |
| 24-hour alert | You should be told at least 24 hours before each debit, with merchant, amount and date |
| Opt out of one debit | You can stop a single payment or the whole mandate |
| ₹15,000 limit | Above this amount, a debit needs extra authentication such as your PIN |
| ₹1 lakh categories | Insurance premiums, mutual fund investments and credit card bills can go up to ₹1 lakh without it |
| Max limit | For variable payments, you can set a maximum |
There’s one exception to the alert rule: FASTag and NCMC balance auto top-ups don’t need the pre-debit notice. So don’t wait for a warning on those.
💡 Pro tip
Google Pay says you can open the 24-hour advance notification itself to pause or cancel. If an alert pops up for something you no longer use, that’s the fastest route.

App menus change with updates, so use these as a map. If a label differs on your phone, look for “Autopay”, “Mandates”, “Subscriptions” or “Recurring”.
Google Pay
Google’s help page gives the clearest steps.
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Autopay. Your live mandates appear under the Live tab.
- Select the mandate and tap Cancel autopay.
- Enter your UPI PIN, then check the Live tab to confirm it has gone.
You can pause a mandate instead, or set an end date. Google also says the linked bank account must be active to cancel, so reactivate a dormant account first if you get an error.
PhonePe
Cashfree’s guide lists this path:
- Open PhonePe and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Manage Payments (or Payment Management), then AutoPay.
- Select the active mandate and remove it.
- Confirm with your UPI PIN.
Paytm, BHIM and bank UPI apps
Cashfree doesn’t give exact menus for these. Look for Mandates, AutoPay or Subscriptions in the app where you created the mandate, tap Revoke, Cancel or Disable, then enter your UPI PIN.
💡 Pro tip
Update the app first if you can’t find the menu. Older versions can hide newer sections. Then search within the app’s settings for “autopay”.
UPI Lite top-ups
Google Pay’s auto top-up is a mandate too. If you set this up and now want to stop it, Google says you can go through the UPI Lite chip and Manage, or profile and Autopay. Our UPI Lite guide explains how this feature works.
The Catch: Cancelling Doesn’t Always End the Subscription
This trips a lot of people up. A mandate is only permission for money to move. The subscription is a separate agreement with the merchant.
⚠️ Watch out
Cashfree’s guide puts it clearly: cancelling AutoPay stops future debits but doesn’t refund past ones, and refund eligibility depends on the merchant’s policy. It also recommends cancelling the merchant subscription first, to avoid billing disputes.
So follow this order for anything paid:
- Open the app or website you subscribed to and cancel the plan there.
- Save the confirmation email or a screenshot.
- Then cancel the mandate in your UPI app.
- Check your bank statement after the next billing date.
Reverse the order, and some services may keep the account active, try to bill you or lock you out. That’s rarely a disaster for a ₹149 plan, but it’s a mess for something like insurance.

What Not to Cancel Without Thinking
Not every mandate is clutter. A few can cost you much more than they save if you stop them casually.
| Mandate type | Before you cancel |
|---|---|
| Loan or EMI | Google Pay says loan mandates can’t be cancelled in the app. Contact the lender. Missed EMIs can hurt your credit score |
| Insurance premium | Have another way to pay. A lapsed policy can lose cover |
| SIP or mutual fund | Stopping is your decision, but do it through the fund platform too |
| Credit card bill | Set a new payment method and date first, as late fees are steep |
| OTT, apps, cloud storage | Safe to cancel, subject to the plan you signed up for |
If you’ve been wondering how missed EMIs show up, our free credit score guide shows where to check.
If a Debit Continues or You Never Approved It
There are two different situations here, and they need different responses.
You cancelled, but money still went
Contact the merchant first and share your confirmation. If that doesn’t work, raise a dispute with your bank or the payment app, and include your cancellation proof. On Google Pay, you can open the mandate and use Get help from the menu to create a ticket.
Business Today says banks must offer a clear grievance process for failed or unauthorised debits. If your payment simply failed but money left, our guide on UPI payments failed but debited covers the timelines and how to escalate.
You never approved this mandate
Treat it as fraud. Cancel the mandate at once, tell your bank, and call the 1930 cyber helpline or use cybercrime.gov.in. Then read what to do when money goes missing from your account.
Mandate requests are also a scam route. Never approve a “collect” or AutoPay request from someone who called you, and remember that a UPI PIN is only used to send money, never to receive it.

I’d set this up, and it costs nothing.
- Pick a date, such as your salary day, and set a phone reminder.
- Open each UPI app you use and look at live mandates.
- Ask one question for each: did I use this last month?
- If not, cancel the plan and then the mandate.
- Do the same on your parents’ phones. They tap “allow” more easily than most of us.
✅ Our verdict
Do the check today, because it’s quick and you’ll likely find at least one thing you forgot. Cancel subscriptions at the source first, then the mandate. Leave loans, insurance and credit card bills alone until you’ve got a replacement payment in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find all my UPI AutoPay mandates?
Check each UPI app you’ve used, since a mandate shows in the app where you approved it. On Google Pay, it’s profile picture, then Autopay, then Live. Your bank’s pre-debit SMS alerts also name the merchants.
Is a UPI PIN needed to cancel AutoPay?
Yes on Google Pay and PhonePe, according to Google and Cashfree. RBI’s 2026 framework requires authentication for modifying or withdrawing a mandate.
Will I get a refund after I cancel UPI AutoPay?
Not automatically. Cancelling only stops future debits. Any refund depends on the merchant’s policy, so contact them with your payment details.
Why can’t I cancel a loan AutoPay on Google Pay?
Google says loan-related mandates can’t be cancelled through the app and asks you to contact the merchant. Speak to your lender, and arrange another way to pay before anything changes.
Can I stop just one payment and keep the mandate?
Yes. Reports on RBI’s framework say you can opt out of a single transaction. Google Pay lets you pause a mandate, including from the 24-hour notification.
The Bottom Line
To cancel UPI AutoPay, go app by app, and cancel the plan before the mandate. RBI’s rules back you up, with a right to withdraw and a 24-hour warning before debits. Open your most-used UPI app now and look at the Live list. It takes less time than reading this article did.
